Description:
Large water side bird, actions similar to any dipper. Adult is entirely brown, lacking white throat and breast of White-throated. Juvenile from juvenile White-throated by browner coloration with conspicuous spotting on upperparts, extensive dark scaling on underparts, and prominent pale fringes to wing.
Distribution:
Common resident and partial altitudinal migrant in all the districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Found near fast-flowing rocky mountain streams and shallow rivers with clear water, with exposed rocks. Up to 4000m, but lower than White-throated Dipper.
Behavior:
Forages on riverbed, by diving from rock into fast-flowing water. Swims on surface; on calmer pools and tarns, frequently dives from a floating position. Diet mainly aquatic invertebrates, especially mayfly and stonefly nymphs, larvae of caddis flies and other similar items.
